This is a two day course for pulmonologists, gastroenterologists, thoracic surgeons, endoscopic surgeons, oncologists, otolaryngologists, and health professionals interested in disease of the airway and esophagus who want to learn or review the current mangagement of these clincial conditions. Participants will learn the current state of practices in these diseases and get hands-on practice in the use, safe handling, and theory of lasers including CO2, Nd:YAG, KTP as well as photodynamic therapy (PTD) and stents.

At the end of this course, participants should be able to understand how to differentiate and handle laser devices including CO2, Nd:YAG, KTP, as well as PDT delivery devices; recognize the indications for use of each type of laser, as well as PDT in the airway and the esophagus; identify the variety of current treatments of airway and esophageal obstruction including PDT, brachytherapy, laser therapy, stent placement, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.

PDT is a recent addition to the armamentarium of clinicians treating disease of the airway and the esophagus. Its recent introduction has changed the management of these difficult clinical problems and altered the indications for use of other, previously utilized modalities. The goal of this course is to provide both theoretical and hands-on education in the use of this new treatment modality and other modalities currently available for the treatment of airway and esophageal obstruction.
